Replacement Air Filters

Air filters need to be regularly replaced. Their air filtering capability diminishes over time based upon the amount of filtering required. If there is a large amount of particles in the air, then the filter may need to be replaced more often. We generally recommend replacing the air filter every 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HEPA stand for?

HEPA is an acronym that stands for "High-Efficiency Particulate Air" filter and is a particle capture efficiency standard used to describe filters that can trap at least 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 microns, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

What makes HEPA filters different?

A HEPA filter, as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy standard, must remove at least 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles from the air that passes through it. The particle size of 0.3 microns is used because it is the most penetrating particle size, or MPPS, and therefore the most difficult to capture. For reference, 0.3 microns is 0.3 micrometers, or 0.3 millionth of a meter, and include contaminants like dust, smoke, pollen, spores, and some bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

A filter is either HEPA or not HEPA. Some filters may say "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like," or "HEPA-style,", however, these filters do not meet the standard defined above and therefore allow a lot more of the smaller particles to pass through the filter and into your living space.

Are there different types of HEPA filters?

Yes. There are two grades of HEPA filters; H13 and H14.

  1. H13 HEPA Filters – Captures >99.97% according to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and >99.95% according to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) of 0.3-micron particles.
  2. H14 HEPA Filters - Captures >99.99% according to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and >99.995% according to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) of 0.3-micron particles.

What are the benefits of HEPA filters?

HEPA filters capture ultrafine contaminants from being circulated through the air you breathe, giving you relief from allergies and other irritants.
